The God Who Remembers

On the Promises God Made to Israel, the Humility They Ask of the Church, and the Families Still Coming Home

He remembers His covenant forever, the word He commanded, for a thousand generations, the covenant He made with Abraham, the oath He swore to Isaac. He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant… Psalm 105:8–10 NIV

We serve a God who has a perfect track record of remembering and keeping His Word. His covenants are complete, requiring no amendments, clauses, footnotes, or fine print. They need no additions, revisions, or qualifications because they accomplish exactly what He intends. They are perfect as He declared them, because God is perfect and makes no mistakes. There is nothing vague, ambiguous, or complicated about them. God knew exactly what He was promising and declaring when He established His covenant.

God has never experienced a lapse in memory. He doesn’t need a secretary to remind Him of what He promised, or a board of directors to hold Him accountable. World leaders, the headlines, cultural trends, public opinion, and political movements do not influence His treatment of Israel or redefine His covenant promises. He has already determined and set His covenant love on that nation, and nothing will shake it.

God’s faithful remembrance of His covenant stands in stark contrast to humanity’s tendency to forget.

In Deuteronomy 8:11–14, God warned Israel not to forget Him or His laws when they entered the Promised Land. Prosperity would tempt them toward pride, and pride would lead them to forget the One who had faithfully brought them there.

Centuries later, Paul issues a warning to Gentile believers. Having been graciously grafted into the rich root of God’s covenant promises, they were not to forget that they do not support the root. Rather, the root supports them. Forgetting this truth would lead to pride and boasting over Israel’s natural branches.

The warnings are separated by centuries, but the temptation is the same: human beings forget, and pride follows. God, however, does not forget. Israel may have forgotten God many times throughout her history, but God has never forgotten Israel, the people whom He bound Himself to by His covenant. In Isaiah 44:21 God declares “O Israel, you will not be forgotten by me.” (ESV) This declaration remains today. Just as Israel was warned not to forget the Lord, so we must be careful not to forget His enduring covenant with Israel.

May the body of Messiah never lose sight of what God has faithfully remembered. Every family making Aliyah is another reminder that the God who remembers His covenant is still at work, faithfully restoring His people to the Land He promised them.
